Saint Sebastian
Andrea Mantegna
1457-1459
In Western Art History I we’re moving into Early Christian and Byzantine art which I’m enjoying a lot because religious artwork is really interesting to me from a nontheistic cultural viewpoint.
Anyway, we looked at this painting of St. Sebastian last Friday and I was kind of struck by how incredibly sensual this particular portrayal of the dude felt. So tonight I looked up different paintings of him over the centuries and they’re all like that, and upon further google-ing, apparently St. Sebastian has been resignified as an icon in the gay community over the last two centuries? I think the point here is that I’m really stoked that I’m finally declaring an art minor.
